PayPal-funded YouTube launch

The three founders of YouTube -- Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim -- all worked for PayPal. He used his money from PayPal's buyout of eBay to fund the initial development of the site.

2. Google owns YouTube

In October 2006, Google acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion. Which was a lot of money at the time, but it seems like little now considering the value of YouTube.

3. Advertisements displayed in 2007

Google is the largest advertising company in the world, and it didn't take long for it to start monetizing YouTube. The service's first advertisement was broadcast in August 2007, just nine months after Google purchased the site.

4. Has Localized Versions of YouTube

In June 2007, YouTube began rolling out localized versions of its site. People in different locations will get different recommendations and features, as well as a localized top-level domain (for example, .com, .co.uk, .fr, etc.).

The US, UK, Brazil, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Poland and Spain were the first 10 countries to have their own YouTube site.

5. YouTube has 98 versions

Today, YouTube's annual revenue is approximately $15 billion. This has prompted Wall Street analysts to value the brand at more than $100 billion.

In any given month, 80 percent of North American adults aged 18 to 49 watch at least one video on YouTube.

9. YouTube has more reach than cable TV

In the United States, YouTube reaches more 18- to 49-year-olds than any broadcast or cable TV network.

10. YouTube is growing in popularity

YouTube's attack on traditional forms of television shows no signs of abating. The latest data available shows that the time spent on YouTube is enjoying double-digit percentage growth. At the same time, there is a decline of double digits in the time taken to watch TV.

Avril Lavigne was first viewed 100 million times

Avril Lavigne's chart-topping hit Girlfriend was the first song to break 100 million views since its 2008 release. There was some controversy about how the video collected his views, with Lavigne's PR company accusing him of gaming the system.

13. Gangnam Style First 1 Billion Views

The first video to break the 1 billion barrier was PSY's global megahit, Gangnam Style. The South Korean artist rose to superstardom on the back of her success, with the United Nations calling the singer a "force for world peace". A little exaggeration, we're sure you'll agree.
